The history of pita bread can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where it was known as “aish” or “esh” and was made from a mixture of flour, water, and yeast. As the recipe for pita bread made its way across the Mediterranean, different regions added their own unique twists. For example, in Greece, pita bread is known as “pitta” and is often stuffed with fillings such as gyro meat, vegetables, and tzatziki sauce. In Turkey, pita bread is called “lavash” and is often used to make wraps or as a base for pizza.

Pita bread also has a rich history in Israel. In fact, pita bread has become so popular in Israel that it is often referred to as the “national bread” of the country. Pita bread is a staple in Israeli cuisine and can be found in everything from falafel sandwiches to shawarma wraps.

One of the most interesting things about pita bread is the way it is cooked. Traditionally, pita bread is baked in a high-temperature oven, where it puffs up due to the heat, creating a pocket in the middle. This pocket is what makes pita bread so versatile, as it can be stuffed with a variety of fillings, from hummus and falafel to fresh vegetables and grilled tofu.

Pita bread woks incredibly well for dipping and I highly recommend it if you are making my Vegan Shakshuka Recipe

Today, pita bread is enjoyed all over the world, with variations in different countries and cultures. It is used as a base for sandwiches and wraps, as a side dish for dips and spreads, and even as a pizza crust.

In conclusion, pita bread is a versatile, delicious, and nutritious bread with a rich history and cultural significance. For vegans, pita bread is a delicious and healthy addition to any meal.
